The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction continues on a project to provide long-term sinkhole remediation on U.S. 202 (DeKalb Pike) in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, to ensure a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public.
Motorists are advised of the following travel restriction:
- Monday, February 24, through early June, northbound U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) will be closed 24/7 between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard/Prince Frederick Boulevard. During the closure, motorists are directed to use Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
When the northbound side reopens, work will shift to southbound U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) with a southbound 24/7 closure. Motorists will be directed to the posted detour.
Under this $22.4 million project, long-term sinkhole remediation is taking place on U.S. 202 (DeKalb Pike) in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, and on Route 29 (Morehall Road) in East Whiteland Township, Chester County.
Currently, weekday lane closures and shifts are scheduled through late February in both directions on Route 29 (Morehall Road) between Great Valley Parkway and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange, from for median removal and sinkhole remediation.
PennDOT’s contractor will utilize a limited mobility grouting program, which will involve drilling a series of holes through the pavement in a “grid” pattern. Pressurized grout will be injected into the drilled holes to fill subsurface voids beneath the roadway. The filling of subsurface voids will help stabilize the ground beneath the pavement and will reduce the risk of future sinkholes. Additional work includes drainage improvements and pavement reconstruction.
Remediation of sinkholes on U.S. 202 (DeKalb Pike) between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard/Prince Frederick Boulevard and Route 29 (Morehall Road) between Great Valley Parkway and the Pennsylvania Turnpike on-ramp were deemed necessary for a long-term solution following reoccurring sinkholes and emergency repairs resulting in traffic disruptions along both corridors.

Heidelberg Materials, LLC of northeast region, is the general contractor on this project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.
