Section 520 Improvements

On Markley Street (U.S. 202 South) - From Elm Street to Johnson Highway

  • Rebuild Markley Street between Elm Street and Johnson Highway to provide one lane in each direction, with a center lane for left turns.
  • Install recessed parking bays in residential areas.
  • Realign Coolidge Boulevard to line up with Brown Street and install a new traffic signal at the realigned intersection.
  • Build a small off-street parking lot on the southwest corner of Harding Boulevard and Markley Street to compensate for the loss of on-street parking between Elm Street and James Street.
  • Replace existing traffic signals on Markley Street intersections at Harding Boulevard, Fornance Street, and Johnson Highway. Signals will utilize Adaptive Signal Control Technology to coordinate traffic signals and enhance traffic flow.
  • Install fiber optic cable to interconnect and coordinate all the signalized intersections for improved traffic flow.
  • Plant trees and install decorative pedestrian streetlights between Elm and Roberts streets to enhance the corridor.
  • Construct new curb ramps at all intersections to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.
  • Install ADA-compliant pushbuttons, pedestrian countdown signals, and continental crosswalks to enhance pedestrian safety at all signalized intersections.
  • Install Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components — CCTV cameras, dynamic message signs, travel time readers, etc. — at key intersections and along the posted detour route.

On Main Street - From Pearl Street to Water Street

  • Rehabilitate the Main Street stone arch bridge over Stony Creek.
  • Rebuild the roadway approaches to the bridge between Pearl and Water streets.

On Johnson Highway - From Markley Street to DeKalb Street

  • Widen to provide room for additional turn lanes at the Markley Street intersection.
  • Re-stripe to create a center lane for left turns.
  • Eliminate on-street parking east of Pine Street.

Section 510, 530 (2019-2022)

A second contract beginning in late 2019 for Section 510 and Section 530 improved 6 miles of Markley Street (U.S. 202 South), from Main Street at the foot of the Dannehower Bridge to Elm Street, the southern limit of Section 520 improvements.

On Markley Street (U.S. 202 South)

  • Rebuild the four-lane section of Markley Street (U.S. 202 South) between Main Street and Marshall Street with minimal widening.
  • Reconstruct and widen Markley Street (U.S. Route 202 South) to one lane northbound, and two lanes southbound, with a center lane for left turns between Marshall and Elm streets.
  • Replace the two existing Markley Street (U.S. Route 202 South) bridges — northbound and southbound — over Stony Creek between Airy and Marshall Streets with a single bridge to accommodate five lanes of traffic.
  • Build a new sidewalk on the west side of Markley Street (U.S. Route 202 South) to link SEPTA train stations at Main Street and Elm Street.
  • Replace existing Markley Street (U.S. Route 202 South) traffic signals at Main Street, Marshall Street, and Elm Street with Adaptive Signal Control Technology — designed to coordinate traffic signals and enhance traffic flow — between Main Street and Johnson Highway.
  • Install ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) curb ramps, pushbuttons, pedestrian countdown signals, and continental crosswalks at all intersections between Main Street and Elm Street to enhance pedestrian safety.
  • Install Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) components — traffic cams, dynamic message signs, travel time readers — along U.S. 202 (Markley Street and DeKalb Pike) from Norristown to Lower Gwynedd Township, Montgomery County.

On Main Street

  • Reconstruct and widen Main Street between Water Street and Barbadoes Street to provide additional travel lanes and improve traffic flow through the signalized intersection at Markley Street (U.S. 202 South).
  • Install brick pavers, trees, and decorative pedestrian street lights between Markley Street (U.S. 202 South) and Barbadoes Street.
  • Upgrade railroad grade crossings at Main Street and Marshall Street by installing new gates and signals in coordination with SEPTA.
  • Upgrade the existing pedestrian signal components at the intersection of Main Street and Barbadoes Street.

Section 530 Improvements

Barbadoes Street Connection

A new connection was made between Lafayette Street and Washington Street, about one hundred (100’) feet west of the intersection of Barbadoes Street and Lafayette Street. The new connector roadway is approximately 250 feet long.

This new Barbadoes Street Connection allows motorists to access Water Street and Washington Street from the east side of Markley Street (U.S. 202 South), replacing the need for westbound Main Street left turns.

In addition, a section of the Schuylkill River Trail (SRT) was relocated, with an ADA-compliant trail crossing the connector road near Washington Street.
