Markley Street Construction Begins on the Northbound Side, Northbound Detour in Place
Winter 2019/2020 — The first stage (Stage 1A) of work to reconstruct and improve Markley Street (U.S. 202 South) and its intersections between Main Street and Elm Street in Norristown, Montgomery County, began in January 2020 with the installation of temporary traffic signals and the detouring of northbound Markley Street traffic.
During Stage 1A construction this winter as conditions permit, the contractor will install temporary traffic control devices; replace the curbs, sidewalks and ADA ramps along northbound Markley Street; install new stormwater management systems; and replace the northbound span of the Markley Street bridge over Stony Creek just north of Airy Street with a permanent structure.
On Monday, January 27, through fall 2022, Markley Street closes to northbound traffic between Main Street and Elm Street. Northbound U.S. 202 motorists heading to Markley Street are being detoured north on DeKalb Street (U.S. 202 North) in Bridgeport Borough to Johnson Highway in Norristown. Northbound motorists using the Dannehower Bridge will be required to turn east or west on Main Street in Norristown for the duration of construction.
Following the Stage 1A construction, which is to be completed in late 2020, the contractor will rebuild the southbound side of Markley Street, Stage 1B, followed by the widening of Main Street between Water Street and Barbadoes Street. In 2021, Main Street construction will start on the west side, then move to the east side, and finish with the middle section.
Alan Myers, LP, of Worcester, Montgomery County is the general contractor on the $23,925,515 project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. Construction on the entire project is expected to be completed in late 2022.
