Grade Crossing Upgrades This Spring
Construction continues on the southbound side of Markley Street (U.S. 202 South) where crews this spring will complete utility and drainage work and begin constructing the new roadway improvements between Elm Street and Main Street.
Utility work ahead this spring includes activating half of the new highway lighting and installation of underground electric facilities for the remainder of the new highway lighting, plus other utility work. Installation of drainage pipes and inlets for the project’s improved stormwater drainage system and sewer system along Main Street may continue into this summer.
The new extension of Barbadoes Street between Lafayette Street and Washington Street has been completed (see right) and is open to traffic and provides an alternate route for traffic heading to and from the industrial area south of Main Street between the east and west sides of Norristown.
In addition to utility work, Main Street construction this spring will begin to focus on improving sidewalks and crosswalks along Main and Markley streets, plus installation of new improved railroad grade crossing warning signals are underway at Main and Marshall streets.
Markley Street continues to be limited to two lanes southbound through the work area between Elm and Main streets. Northbound Markley Street traffic continues to be detoured through neighboring Bridgeport and along DeKalb Pike through Norristown around the project area during construction.
