Construction Focused This Fall on Paving, Main/Markley Intersection Improvements
Construction this fall on the Markley Street (U.S.202 South) Improvement Project in Norristown will focus on placing the asphalt riding surface between Elm Street and the new bridge over the Stony Creek and on continuing improvements at the intersection of Main and Markley streets.
On Markley Street south of the Stony Creek bridge, crews are wrapping up utility work and completing placement of the concrete pavement approaching the intersection with Main Street. The concrete crews will install new precast concrete roadway slabs to complete the intersection before the end of this year.
Installation of the pavement precast slabs is being completed over ten calendar days, around-the-clock, from December 2-12. The intersection is closed continuously during this operation, and Main Street and Markley Street traffic is being detoured during the installation.
On Main Street east of Markley Street, utility work will continue through the fall and possibly into early 2023. On Main Street west of the intersection, drainage, curb, sidewalk, and lighting installation will be completed and that section of Main Street will be paved by the end of the year.
Traffic signal upgrades on both Markley and Main streets will continue into late fall.
Installation of the new Main Street SEPTA railroad grade crossing will take place this fall as well. The new Marshall Street SEPTA crossing was completed this summer with installation of new gates and warning systems.
Markley Street continues to be limited to two lanes southbound through the work area between Elm and Main streets. Northbound Markley Street traffic continues to be detoured around the project area during construction through neighboring Bridgeport and along DeKalb Pike through Norristown.
Alan Myers, LP, of Worcester, Montgomery County is the general contractor on the $23,925,515 project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. Construction on the entire project is expected to be completed in 2023.
Additional improvements to U.S. 202 are currently underway north of Johnson Highway in East Norriton and Whitpain townships. Go here for information about that project.
